Most framing lumber
markets paused after several weeks of steady sales at firm to higher prices. Southern Pine
was a notable exception, as a strong week of sales pushed order files out and prices
higher. Momentum from previous week's action carried some prices in other species higher,
as well. But a spotty sales pace in Western Canada and the West failed to keep up with
production. This generated a softer tone, although the increases in Southern Pine helped
the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite post a $2 gain.
Panel market
Sales of OSB lagged the stronger pace seen in plywood markets. While business was
improving for some dealers, most continued to limit their purchases to a needs-only basis.
After a sluggish start, trading in Southern Pine plywood gained momentum on Tuesday and
carried through Friday. Strong participation from secondaries extended some mills' order
files into July. Western Fir plywood sales were fluid in the field, although dealers and
distributors were less inclined to replenish because of extended mill order files.
