Finnish timber trade drops 23% in 8 months this year

According to the Finnish Natural Resources Institute (Luke), in August 2022, the country's timber trade was very active. The total sales of raw materials exceeded the average level of the previous five years by more than 60%. During regular sales, softwood log prices remained at their July levels, while softwood pulpwood prices fell slightly.

Timber trade from private forests is accelerating, with recorded timber trade rising to 4.2 million cubic metres in August 2022. This is more than 60% higher than the average of the previous five years. The last time a single-month trade volume record of more than 4 million cubic meters was sold was in August more than a decade ago.

Overall, however, timber trade volumes in January-August 2022 fell by 23% year-on-year, below the five-year average of 7%. Among them, log trade fell by 3% compared to the previous five years, and pulpwood trade fell by 12%.

Basically, Finnish log prices have collectively risen sharply since March, and now in August, the prices of the above logs have broken the top line again.

Spruce logs rose to an average of 74.1 euros per cubic meter;

The regular sale of pine logs is 69.5 euros per cubic meter.

The real price level for logs was 5% higher year-on-year.

The fixed price of spruce logs used for pulp production is 21.9 euros per cubic meter (guide price), and the average price per cubic meter in the actual selling price is 38 euros;

The fixed price of pine logs used for pulp production is 20 euros per cubic meter (guide price), and the average price per cubic meter in the actual selling price is 36.3 euros;

The fixed price of birch logs used for pulp production is 19.7 euros per cubic meter (guide price), while the average price per cubic meter in actual sales is 37.5 euros per cubic meter.
