Switzerland Graubščnden lacks energy wood
[Aug 16, 2024]

Wood is a renewable energy source that can replace fossil fuels such as oil or gas. A study commissioned by the canton of Graubščnden now shows that Graubščnden cannot cover the current demand for wood for energy production. Today, 40 per cent of energy wood has to be imported.

A study shows that the canton of Graubščnden lacks energy wood. In a press release, the canton of Graubščnden announced that the study provides important insights into the development of a wood chain.

At best 70 per cent At present, the canton of Graubščnden cannot cover its entire demand for energy wood from within the canton, the press release continues. The canton is dependent on imports from outside the canton and from abroad for almost 40 per cent of its total consumption, which amounts to 400,000 cubic metres per year.

Multi-stage utilisation The introduction of wood energy harvesting is not a sustainable and stable solution. Market pricing, the accessibility of the forests and the ecological services provided by the forest have a limiting effect. Sustainable wood utilisation must always be considered in terms of optimal cascade utilisation.
