MoistTech highlights NIR tech for reliable moisture data on wood pellets
[Sep 26, 2024]

Sarasota, Fla.-based manufacturer MoistTech Corp.¡¯s near infrared technology can help Canadian wood pellet producers collect accurate and reliable moisture data on their wood products.

MoistTech showcased its IR3000-W series moisture sensors featuring cutting-edge NIR tech at the Wood Pellet Association of Canada¡¯s annual conference earlier this month.

It says NIR tech provides accurate and reliable moisture analysis of wood products ¡ª which affects many wood properties such as strength, drying, glue curing and bond performance.

The IR3000-W series reduces fire and explosion risk, prevents board press explosions, offers precise dryer control, and monitors blending for control of moisture and resin in wood products.

Pre-calibrated in the factory with customer samples, MoistTech guarantees the IR3000-W will never drift over time or need recalibration ¡ª where other technologies might necessitate monthly or yearly calibrations that incur costs and result in downtime.

The company says NIR tech can also help mills to reduce their fuel consumption and maximize energy efficiency by reducing CO2 emissions during drying, and measurement of material at the exit ensures material headed for the blender is at the optimum moisture content for resin addition, as well as optimum moisture prior to the palletizer.

MoistTech says the IR3000-W is unaffected by most material variations, such as height and colour, or by ambient temperature and lights. The software automatically compensates for small gaps, inert material, foreign objects, and conveyor surfaces. It uses cast aluminum enclosures to effectively disperse heat and ensure more accurate readings.

Real-time, continuous moisture measurement enables operational personnel to make crucial, immediate adjustments to the production process, MoistTech says. NIR analysis removes all manual steps of collecting, drying, and accurately weighing samples and feeds real-time data directly into the mill¡¯s distributed control system for process control.

Popular wood applications of the IR3000-W include bark, wood biomass, plywood, wood chips and pellets, and sawdust.
