Brink Forest Products has submitted a formal proposal to acquire four sawmills from Canfor Corporation. The acquisition includes mills in Bear Lake, Fort St. John, Vanderhoof, and Houston.

In a statement, the company said it is aiming to safeguard over 5,000 jobs in Northern B.C. amid significant industry challenges, reinforcing its commitment to sustaining regional economies and protecting local jobs.

To support the acquisition, and with Canfor’s agreement, Brink engaged Industrial Forest Service (IFS) to perform a detailed analysis of the renewable timber tenures associated with each of the four mills. IFS determined the fair market value of these assets and projected future volumes. Brink said the analysis focused on two primary objectives which include establishing the future volume of replaceable tenure apportioned to each mill, as well as determining the fair market value per cubic meter of tenure in the current marketplace.

“This acquisition is essential for Brink and the communities we’ve served for 50 years,” said John A. Brink, founder and CEO. “Canfor has been a strategic partner for over 30 years, and their sawmills are vital to the survival of our operations. With their impending exit from Northern B.C., we had to make a bold move or risk losing thousands of jobs that depend on this supply chain.”

Earlier this month, Canfor announced the closure of some of its sawmills in Northern B.C.
