BIG MDF OPPORTUNITIES SYDNEY: A study by forestry consultants BIS Shrapnel shows that Australian and New Zealand producers of medium-density fibreboard have big opportunities in global markets, the NZ Shipping Gazette reports. It notes that the two countries share a US$359 million slice of the global market for MDF, and that opportunities for exports are likely to improve with significant shortages projected for North Asia and North America. MDF capacity is 830,000 square metres in Australia and 875,000 square metres in New Zealand, with the first exporting more than half of its output and the second exporting over 80%. "China, Japan and Korea will require substantial imports by 2006, creating excellent opportunities for Australian and New Zealand exporters," the study says, urging the two countries to place more emphasis on product development and promotion.
