COMPOSITES LOOKING HEALTHIER USA: North American MDF and particleboard prices are projected to become firmer as excess capacity is soaked up, Wood Markets Monthly reports. The recovery in MDF began last year, and - except for a 2% hiccup in 2001 particleboard production and consumption have risen steadily over two decades. The origins of the MDF glut go back to 1993 when tight supplies stimulated a burst of construction from 1995 to 1997. "While demand for MDF continues to grow, new greenfield capacity has been non-existent since 1997," the newsletter says. Demand for both products is projected to be stable-to-slightly-growing over the next two years, keeping prices at present levels. |
